What happens at the Burnaby casino door
Before the first table or machine, there is a door, and in Burnaby the door has rules. This page covers the two that matter at Grand Villa Casino: the legal age of 19 and the photo ID scan that every person goes through. It also lists which cards security accepts.

Age 19, and ID for everyone
The legal age for gambling in British Columbia is 19, and that includes casinos. Starting June 26, 2023, B.C. casinos require government-issued photo ID from every person who walks in. At the entrance, security runs it through a scanner.
Every scan compares the card with a list of people who are not allowed inside. People who signed up for BCLC's voluntary self-exclusion program, Game Break, are on that list. Once a person is admitted, the system keeps none of their personal information.
No jurisdiction in North America required ID at a casino door before B.C. did. Somebody had to go first.
Photo ID accepted at the door
- B.C. or North American driver's licence
- B.C. Identity Card (BCID) or B.C. Services Card
- Canadian or international passport
- Canadian citizenship card or Canadian permanent resident card
- Secure Certificate of Indian Status card
- Identity card for Canadians, issued by Global Affairs Canada
- Membership cards issued by First Nations, Métis or Inuit bands
- Government-issued foreign ID
No card, no entry
No card means no entry, whatever a person's age looks like. Grey hair is not on the accepted list.
Parking at Grand Villa costs nothing: a parkade connects directly to the main entrance, and several outdoor lots are also available.
Questions
Is personal information stored when a visitor enters?
Not for anyone who gets in. Security scans the card and checks it against the restricted list, but nothing personal is kept on admitted guests.
Does someone who clearly looks older than 19 still need ID?
Yes. Government-issued photo ID is required of every person who walks into a B.C. casino. The rule does not depend on how old someone looks.
Can a visitor from outside Canada get in?
Yes, provided they are 19 or older. Government-issued foreign ID is on the accepted list, and so are international passports.
